ABOUT FIGURED OUT
You should understand the financial side of the business you’re building.
Figured Out is a bookkeeping, accounting & advisory practice built around a simple belief:
Accurate numbers matter, but they become far more useful when you understand what they mean and can use that understanding to make better decisions.
We put the financial foundations in place, help make the numbers easier to engage with, and walk alongside you as you become more aware of what is happening in your business and more intentional about what happens next.
Better financial awareness creates more choice, more control and ultimately more freedom in the way you run your business.
Why Figured Out Exists ↓
WHY FIGURED OUT EXISTS
Doing the accounting is only part of the job.
I started Figured Out because I kept seeing the same gap, business owners could have a bookkeeper, they could have an accountant, their tax returns could be submitted and their compliance could technically be up to date, and yet they could still have very little idea what was actually happening financially in their own business.
They were receiving reports they did not really understand, making decisions from the bank balance, worrying about tax when deadlines arrived, guessing at pricing and sometimes avoiding the numbers altogether because looking at them felt harder than carrying on.
The problem was not simply a lack of accounting, the problem was that the financial information, presented as reports, was not understood or applied by the person actually running the business.
That is the gap Figured Out is built to close.
We keep the financial foundations strong, but we also explain, interpret, ask questions and help you engage with what the numbers are telling you. Compliance is necessary by law, accounting shows us what has happened, understanding the story those numbers tell, gives you more choice and control about what happens next.
Figured Out was built to help business owners move from avoidance and reaction towards awareness, participation and more intentional decisions.
MEET SHELLY
Accountant by training. Advisor by nature. Business owner in real life.
I’m Shelly, the founder of Figured Out.
I’m an accountant and business advisor, and I’ve spent years working with small businesses and seeing firsthand that getting the bookkeeping and compliance right is important, but it is rarely the whole answer.
Business owners need to understand what is happening too.
They need someone who can explain the financial side in plain language, help them connect the numbers to what is happening in the real business, and create a space where they can ask the questions they may feel they should already know the answers to.
That is the kind of relationship I wanted Figured Out to provide.
I’m not interested in making financial management sound more complicated than it needs to be. I’d rather help you understand enough to ask better questions, notice what deserves your attention and make decisions with more awareness.
And because I run a business too, I know that business ownership is not a neat spreadsheet.
Things get messy. We put things off. We make decisions with incomplete information. Sometimes we know exactly what we should be doing and still do something else.
The goal is not perfection.
It is to become more aware, more engaged and better equipped to make the next decision.
WHAT MATTERS TO US
The beliefs behind the way we do things
Figured Out was built around more than getting the numbers right. These are some of the principles that shape the way we think about financial support, business ownership and the relationships we build with our clients.
Bookkeeping beyond compliance
Getting it done is not the same as understanding it.
Compliance matters, but it is the foundation, not the finish line. Financial information becomes far more valuable when you understand what it means and can use it in the way you run your business.
No shame around what you don’t know
You were not born knowing how to run the financial side of a business.
There should be space to ask questions, admit when something does not make sense and learn without feeling judged for what you think you “should” already know.
You stay part of the conversation
Your business finances should never feel like something happening somewhere else.
We can handle the technical work, but we do not want to remove you from the financial side of your own business. Understanding and participation matter.
Plain language over accountant-jargon
Complicated does not automatically mean clever.
If something can be explained simply, it should be. Our job is to make financial information more useful, not make you feel like you need a finance degree to understand it.
Progress matters more than perfection
Real businesses are messy sometimes.
Things get behind. Decisions do not always work out. Habits take time to change. What matters is recognising what is happening and taking the next useful step.
Awareness creates more choices
The more you understand, the more intentionally you can decide what happens next.
Better financial awareness gives you more choice, more control and ultimately more freedom in the way you run your business.
Simple Choices. Consistent Actions. Extraordinary Transformations
Through awareness we can turn reactivity into choice and ultimately freedom
